RECLAIMING THE FLAG

Yosef's Bones

Painting the American flag is
simultaneous loving and mourning,
holding and fearing. Long leggy stripes
of red and white showing off.
Marilyn Monroe’s lips, painted and
parted, revealing sparkling white teeth.
“Happy birthday, Mr. President!”
And in the blue corner the sky that
broke our hearts—the murderous
field above Afghanistan.
Oh red, white and blue!
If white is pure then red is blood.
Row upon row of graves in the wind.
